For most psychiatric assessments and reviews, a video consultation works very well, because the assessment is mainly a detailed conversation. If your psychiatrist feels you need something that cannot be done online, they will tell you.

Often a diagnosis can be discussed at the first appointment if there is enough information. Some people need further assessment or follow-up before a diagnosis is confirmed.

Yes, when clinically appropriate. Prescriptions issued during an assessment or follow-up are included in the appointment fee. Diagnosis and prescribing are never guaranteed.

Some controlled medicines, including ADHD stimulants, can be prescribed after assessment, with extra safeguards such as identity checks, physical health checks and monitoring.

With your consent, a clinical summary is sent to your GP. Some treatments may not be possible if you decline GP communication.

After treatment is stable, your psychiatrist can propose that your NHS GP takes over prescribing. It is your GP's decision. If they decline, private prescribing can usually continue. Learn more.

Existing patients can request repeat prescriptions when clinically appropriate. Reviews and monitoring may be needed first.

Once your treatment is stable, your psychiatrist can propose a shared care agreement to your NHS GP. Whether to accept is entirely your GP's decision. If they decline, private prescribing and follow-up can usually continue.

It helps to think about examples of your difficulties now and in childhood. School reports, previous letters, and input from someone who knew you as a child (such as a parent) can be very useful.
