What is ADHD in adults?
ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition. It starts in childhood, but many people are not diagnosed until adulthood, often after years of being told they are disorganised, lazy or not trying hard enough.
In adults, hyperactivity often shows up as inner restlessness rather than running around. Inattention can be missed, especially in women and in people who have learned to cope by working extra hard.
Untreated ADHD is often linked with anxiety, low mood, relationship strain and problems at work. With the right diagnosis and support, many people find daily life becomes much more manageable.

ADHD medication and titration
Medication is one part of ADHD treatment. If it is right for you, your psychiatrist will talk through the options, benefits and possible side effects.
Before starting, you may need physical health checks such as blood pressure, pulse and weight. The dose is then adjusted gradually in 20-minute titration reviews until the balance between benefit and side effects is right.
Some ADHD medicines are controlled drugs, so extra safeguards apply, including identity checks and regular monitoring.
Shared care with your GP
Once your treatment is stable, your psychiatrist can propose a shared care agreement. Your NHS GP then takes over prescribing, while the specialist remains available for advice and reviews.
GPs are not obliged to accept shared care, and it cannot be guaranteed. If your GP declines, private prescribing can usually continue.

How long does an adult ADHD assessment take?
The initial ADHD assessment at Happy Clinic is 60 minutes. Sometimes further information or another appointment is needed before a diagnosis can be confirmed.
Will I definitely be diagnosed or prescribed medication?
No. Diagnosis and treatment depend on a careful clinical assessment. ADHD medication is only prescribed when it is clinically safe and appropriate, and some people need physical health checks or further assessment first.
Can my GP take over my ADHD prescription?
Once your treatment is stable, your psychiatrist can propose a shared care agreement to your NHS GP. Whether to accept is entirely your GP's decision. If they decline, private prescribing and follow-up can usually continue.
What should I prepare before the assessment?
It helps to think about examples of your difficulties now and in childhood. School reports, previous letters, and input from someone who knew you as a child (such as a parent) can be very useful.
Do you assess children for ADHD?
